ABOUT PHOTOSTARTSHEET.COM

by: Photo Start Sheet

The most powerful Internet tool for browsing the world of photography

Welcome to the latest version of PhotoStartSheet, a compact index of links to the best photo sites on the Internet.

Order out of chaos

Back in the day -- when I lived in California -- my neighbour, a psychiatrist, said: "John, I've figured you out. I think you're a List-Maker."

I don't know what prompted this observation, but there's some truth in it.

A primitive way of imposing order on chaos is to make a list. At least a list gives you the illusion that order has been established, even if it's a procrustean kind of order in which part of the subject has been either chopped up or excluded altogether.

I plead guilty on both counts. There are hundreds of very good photo sites which haven't made it to my selection of links, but I hope those you see will lead you to all the others, not eventually but quickly.

Easy to use

I apologise to anyone who feels lost, having gotten used to the layout of the old, one-page PhotoStartSheet. I've tried to keep the new one simple to navigate. I've divided it into half a dozen pages and have included some additional lists which allow me to be more comprehensive, namely:

(Worldwide) Photographic Associations

(Worldwide) Photography Galleries

UK Camera Clubs

I've made these additions because there's nothing else on the Internet which offers the same, straightforward access with up-to-date links.

The bad thing about directories

Directories try to be comprehensive and their huge number of entries tends to deter people from browsing. PhotoStartSheet is not a directory, as such, but a set of simple "start pages" for exploring the world of photography on the Internet. I've selected the sites very carefully according to strict criteria of accuracy, up-to-dateness, acceptable design standards, and wealth of content.

Mobile friendly

My main purpose in changing the design has been to make the site responsive so it works on mobile phones and tablets as well as on wide-screen displays. It's always been usable on those devices, but I've improved it.

Personal bias

I've tried to be objective in selecting links, although my personal bias is towards fine art and street photography. General and mainly non-photo-related links I use frequently are on the Editor's Choice page, and there's now a separate page for the Top 20 Technology News Sites.

I hope you enjoy the new PhotoStartSheet. Millions of great photos, tons of information -- and ALL photo products -- are just a click or two away.

Oh yes, two other things: my new eBook on street photography. On Amazon now!

And I sometimes moonlight as a food photographer to help my partner Oi Cheepchaiissara. Together we've created the 16-eBook series "Thai Food Secrets" (also published in print form by Asia Books) and the Kindle eBook "Oi's Ultimate Guide to Pad Thai."
